A Starbucks Faith

by Christine on January 21, 2009

Stopped into Starbucks the other day. While sipping my Grande Latte (Whole Milk) – I noticed this quote on the back of my cup.

Starbucks cup.JPG “I have faith. Faith in our wondrous capacity for hope and good, love and trust, healing and forgiveness. Faith in the blessing of our infinite ability to wonder, question, pray, feel, think and learn. I have faith. Faith in the infinite possibilities of the human spirit.”

~James Brown, Emmy-winning sportscaster and co-host of FOX NFL Sunday

Knowing this was bloggable, I snapped a photo with my iPhone. Today I came across this John Calvin quote:

Take away the word, therefore, and no faith will remain – the word itself, whatever be the way in which it is conveyed to us, is a kind of mirror in which faith beholds God. In this, therefore, whether God uses the agency of man or works immediately by his own power, it is always by his word that he manifests himself to those whom he designs to draw to himself.

John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book III, Chapter II (emphasis mine)

Or you could say "drink for thought". Thanks!

I am awed by the culture that surrounds the Starbucks phenomena. We did a study at the church on an article discussing the "identity" and "self-worth" that customers achieve by simply ordering their signature drink, i.e a venti caramel machiatto with soy milk. I will try to find the article for you.

I'm guessing ordering a venti caramel machiatto with soy milk offers a rather temporary identity lift. Thankful that our identity with Christ lasts eternally, even when we're not so "cool". Thanks for the interesting comment. Makes one think, doesn't it?

Hi, Chris … personally, I don't care for their coffee … but, next time I am near one, I must try a Grand Latte with whole milk? Good thing I know my identity is in Christ, not the cup of latte!

Thankful with you our identity is in Christ.

I am thankful with you that our identity is in Christ.

Thanks for a helpful comment. I glad as well that our identity is in Christ.

I tried the grand latte this past Saturday. I was shopping at a Trader Joe's and saw Starbucks across the street. I made the mistake of having a shot of vanilla in it … waaaaaay too sweet! I'll try again some time, but PLAIN!
We should get together sometime for lunch to catch up.

Oh, I don’t like the Vanilla, way too sweet. Next time just go plain.
